Karl Ove Hufthammer

Tom Lehrer er ein matematikklærar som på 50- og 60-talet skreiv fleire satiriske og ekstremt morosame viser. Eg har lånt plata hans The Year That Was på biblioteket.

Plata startar med ein song om brorskap og toleranse – National Brotherhood Week. Lehrer innleiar denne slik:

During National Brotherhood Week various special events are arranged to drive home the message of brotherhood. This year, for example, on the first day of the week, Malcolm X was killed, which gives you an idea of how effective the whole thing is.

Og dette er verkelig ein skikkelig gladsong:

Oh, the Protestants hate the Catholics
And the Catholics hate the Protestants,
And the Hindus hate the Moslems,
And everybody hates the Jews.

Vidare har Lehrer blant anna krass kritikk av protestsongarar i songen The Folk Song Army («it don’t matter if you put a couple of extra syllables into a line»), og USAs «diplomatiske» utanrikspolitikk i Send the Marines.

Men favoritten min på denne plata er songen New Math. «The New Math» var eit nytt pedagogisk opplegg for matematikkundervising utvikla på tidlig 1960-talet. Tom Lehrer oppsummerer det heile so fint:

But in the new approach, as you know, the important thing is to understand what you’re doing – rather than to get the right answer.

Elles har Lehrer òg ein song for tredje verdskrig («So long, mom; I’m off to drop the bomb»), og eit forslag til modernisering av katolske gudstenester i The Vatican Rag.

Sjølv om songane til dels er veldig krasse, er dei på ingen måte smaklause, slik sånn satire lett kan bli. Og både melodiane og tekstane har kvalitetar. Tekstane inneheld for øvrig òg nokre geniale ordspel og rim.
